In the story, Merferd is given the mandate to color the world. But as he begins his mission, his enemies, depicted in the story as the Night-Painters, attack and turn the world back to black and white.
Merferd’s ‘Branch of Light’ has lost it’s power to color. He tricks the Night-Painters off the earth and into the cosmos, to spend eternity happily painting the stars.
